Senesh, Hannah

Senesh, Hannah
1921–1944
Senesh was a Hungarian Jewish girl who worked with Partisan forces in eastern Europe. In 1939 she left Hungary for Palestine but she wanted to participate in the war so she volunteered to go on a mission to help Jews in Nazi countries in 1942. On 15 March 1944 she was parachuted into Yugoslavia and joined a Partisan group. After three months she crossed into Hungary and joined resistance workers. She was captured before she could begin her mission and was interned in the Horthy Miklos Prison where she was tortured. In jail she kept the spirits of the other prisoners up by singing out snippets of information she picked up. She was sentenced to death and executed on 7 November 1944.
